In addition to speaking as the Executive Chairman of Caterpillar, the largest construction and mining equipment manufacturing company in the world, Mr. Oberhelman also addressed the Economic Club as the immediate past Chairman of The Business Roundtable. He discussed such topics as the economic state of the heavy equipment manufacturing industry, the mood of the country, the global business climate – particularly in regard to trade issues – and the need for regulatory and tax reform. He said he is optimistic about the future of the United States, despite current sharp divisions in the country, and reminded the audience that “We’ve come together before, and with some help we can do it again.” The solution he offered focused on stimulating “Robust economic growth [as] a practical step toward solving our national discontent.”
