The Economic Club of Washington hosted a Medical Panel featuring Kurt D. Newman, M.D., President and CEO, Children's National Health System; Paul B. Rothman, M.D., Dean of the School of Medicine and CEO, Johns Hopkins Medicine; and Craig B. Thompson, M.D., President and CEO, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center to explore with David Rubenstein some of the major issues confronting the health care industry. The panel considered a wide variety of topics including the future of medicine, major healthcare challenges affecting the U.S. such as obesity and rising medical costs, the Affordable Care Act’s impact on access to healthcare, and the business of running a health system. On the topic of obesity, Dr. Thompson noted that the average American takes only nine minutes to eat a meal, while the body takes 20 minutes to complete the physiological process. “[The issue of obesity] really could boil down [to]… just the time it takes socially that [we] eat a meal to actually get to satiety, not to overeat,” he explained.
