25th Anniversary Event
More than 1,600 people crowded into the ballroom at the Marriott Wardman Park hotel to celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Economic Club of Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, June 5. Several dozen reporters and camera crews from a variety of media outlets also were present to report on the occasion.
The celebration began with a pleasant pre-dinner reception for all attendees in the Marriott Foyer, and a smaller gathering, sponsored by PwC and Orchard Global Asset Management, where Victor Hoskins, Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, The District of Columbia Government, presented the Club with a Proclamation declaring June 5, 2012 as The Economic Club of Washington, D.C., Day.
The doors to the ballroom opened at 7 p.m., and guests were greeted by Economic Club President David M. Rubenstein who introduced a video message from President Barack Obama congratulating the Club on its 25th anniversary.
A pre-dinner highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Economic Club 25th Anniversary Community Grants. Ten area nonprofit organizations with a primary mission of preparing underserved youth for success in school, the workforce, and life were presented with individual grants of $50,000 each. Economic Club members decided to make this one-time only contribution of $500,000 as a tribute to the 25th anniversary in recognition of the Club’s long-standing commitment to the well-being of Washington metropolitan area. A full list of grant recipients can be found here.
A champagne toast, led by President Rubenstein and former Club Presidents Senator George J. Mitchell and Vernon E. Jordan, Jr., who also were Honorary Co-Chairs of the celebration, opened the dinner portion of the evening. Mary Brady, Executive Director of the Economic Club of Washington, was recognized for her 25 years of continuing service to the Club. Guests then dined on grilled beef of tenderloin with mushroom demi paired with shrimp stuffed with crabmeat topped with hollandaise sauce.
Promptly after dinner, featured guest Warren E. Buffett joined President Rubenstein on stage for a conversation about current global economic and business trends. Mr. Buffett also shared personal anecdotes about his life and career.
The evening concluded with an after-dinner reception during which cordials and sweets were served.
